|Meiringspoort Day Trip
Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times. Each crossing, or drift, has its own name and story – stop for photos and lunch.
Entry to the poort is via Klaarstroom, 55 km east of Prince Albert en route to Oudtshoorn and the coast. Following spectacular floods which caused great damage, the road has been reconstructed over the past two years at a cost of R70 million. Meiringspoort was officially re-opened by the Western Cape Premier, Gerald Morkel, on 20th October 2000.
|Prince Albert Day Trip
Prince Albert lies at the entrance to the 27km Swartberg Pass, considered one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the world: an untarred road winds to the summit 1 583 metres above sea level in steep zig-zags and sudden switchbacks, with breath-taking views at every turn. Stop for photos and lunch.
The turn-off to Gamkaskloof lies near the summit of the pass. The entrance is through a narrow Cape sandstone kloof where the eye is drawn upwards by the convoluted rock faces to the sparkling sky above. The only sounds are bubbling water, the wind in the trees and birdsong.
Scenic drive through George and over the Outeniqua Mountains past Oudtshoorn to the Cango Caves, one of the world’s great natural wonders sculptured by nature through the ages – a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations.
We also visit an ostrich farm, where you can stand on an egg and even ride an ostrich! After a delicious lunch at award-winning Jemima’s Restaurant in Oudtshoorn, it’s on to Cango Wildlife Ranch, a breeding facility for endangered species – here you can touch a cheetah, enjoy the closeness of a tiger cub or wrap yourself in a python!
Visit Storms river mouth, lunch or Tsitsikamma canopy tours. Travel through the beautiful Lake District and catch a glimpse of the ocean as the road winds along the forests and lakes. Pass beautiful forests and Bloukrans, the highest bungy jumping site in the world en route to Tsitsikamma Village for an experience you’ll never forget.
Optional Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour, the first of its kind in Africa. After lunch, we return via the scenic route of The Bloukrans Pass, Natures Valley, and Plettenberg Bay.
Travel through the beautiful Lake District and catch a glimpse of the ocean as the road winds along the forests and lakes. We visit Knysna Elephant Park for a guided tour. Get up close and personal to the majestic elephants. Touch, feed and interact with these gentle giants. Learn all about their behavioural patterns and peculiarities.
After lunch, we board a speedboat for a tour of a lifetime. Enjoy the playful bottlenose dolphins that come right up to the boat. Get close to Humpback, Southern Right and Brydes Whales or even spot an Orca depending on the time of year. A large and very active colony of Cape Fur Seals lives permanently on the Robberg Peninsula and can be seen all year round. Also encounter Hammerhead, Ragged Tooth, Maco and Great White Sharks who prey on these seals.
Travel past the Lake District and catch a glimpse of the ocean as the road winds along the forests and lakes. Visit Buffels Bay with its rocky shores and beautiful beaches en route and enjoy morning tea at the Goukamma Station.
We will visit the Knysna Heads and an African Market before having lunch at the Knysna Waterfront. After lunch, enjoy a boat cruise to the spectacular Knysna Heads. We will depart late afternoon returning to Wilderness.
Visit the Wild Oats Farmers’ Market and experience over 60 stalls of the finest local farm produce, home bakes, live music, etc, an authentic taste of the Garden Route and Sedgefield. Move along to the craft market to experience our local art and curious, varying from traditional African art and craft to top class modern mosaic.
08:00 – 11:30 every Saturday.
